Commando troops from the Timur Special Forces unit recently launched a bold operation in the Sumî region: they infiltrated the enemy positions, interrupted the supply lines and destroyed the control centers in a surprise attack that-according to Kiev-eliminated an entire Russian battalion, stopping them.

At least 334 Russian soldiers were killed and over 550 injured, the Ukraine Military Intelligence (Hur) was announced.

It was a Timur brand mission, a group of elite forces within the Hur that performs ambushs and raids on land and sea.

The unit is responsible for some of the most sophisticated war, giving its troops an almost mythical status in Ukraine.

Volodimir Zelenski named the unit after the war name of his commander: Lieutenant-Colonel Timur, the one known for several spectacular operations behind the enemy lines.

The commander who flew a flag in busy crime

On August 24, 2023 – Ukraine's Independence Day – it acquired a hero status, after taking a Ukrainian flag to Crimea for the first time after almost ten years of occupation.

The bold raid in the Black Sea involved traveling in boats and then with skijets for a distance of 200 kilometers before storming a Russian base that housed a powerful electronic war system. Despite the confrontations with the Russians, the target was hit, and the mission – with the code name “Produdjenia Sili” (awakening of force) – was cataloged as a significant military success.

“The inhabitants would see that we came, and the Russians would understand that we can appear anywhere and anytime,” Timur Lieutenant said later on that operation.

What is known about Timur Unit

It is one of the largest units of special forces of Hur and consists of approximately 20 specialized divisions in irregular war.

For example, the units nobody and the crow are known for their state -of -the -art technology, namely the drone and sea attack, while the Bratstvo Battalion “Brotherhood” excels in amphibious raids and sabotage operations on the Russian territory.

The unit also has a division made up of battle divers, nicknamed “Spectrul 33”.

“The peculiarity of this special unit is that it is composed of various units with unique skills and special training, enriched by the experience in modern war,” explained Dmitro Jmailo, political-military expert and executive director of the Ukrainian Center for Security and Cooperation.

“It is probably one of the first units in World War II that has successfully carried out deep raids in secret missions in Russia controlled territories,” he said for The Telegraph.

Versatility and experience

The Timur unit participated in some of the bloodiest battles of the war, from occupying the “road of life” in Bahmut to symbolic blows for the growth of morality, including the release of the island of the Black Sea and the hunting of Russian mercenaries in Sudan.

“She is equipped with Western armament, she has a vast experience on the battlefield, she is extremely motivated and extremely effective,” says Ivan Stupak, Ukrainian military analyst and former officer in the Ukraine Security Service (SBU).

In the recent operation at Sumî, the unit has proven its versatile ability to attack and the ability to fight effectively in any environment and land: trenches, forests and in the air, noted the analyst.

Russia invaded the Northeast region earlier this year, with the explicit purpose of creating a “buffer area” and preventing other cross-border incursions of Ukraine in the Russian border regions.

On Tuesday, Hur announced that the advancement of the Russian troops in Sum was “stopped suddenly” after the Timur unit infiltrated into the enemy positions and “defeated” hundreds of Vladimir Putin soldiers in body fights and aerial attacks.

Nearly 1,000 Russian soldiers were killed or injured, according to Hur, who also published images of the attack made from several directions by Ukrainian troops.

Hur did not specify the accurate date or location of the operation. However, Open Source analysts and sources have estimated that Russian offensive operations in the northeast region have stagnated at the end of May.

The operation of Chymera, Yunger, Stugna, Siberian Battalion, Aratta, 1514, Paragon, Art Division, the first line, the Raven group and the 6th unit of special operations, all members of Timur, participated in the operation.

Missions on the front and abroad

In May, the Timur unit performed an assault in the Kharkov region, which involved a synchronization of air power, artillery, drone attacks and sabotage operations behind the Russian lines.

Its objective: to prevent Russian efforts to cross the Oskil river, which represents a key natural barrier against the enemy forces targeting the city of Kupiansk, a vital fortress on the northern edge of the front.

According to Hur, the special forces attacked 600 Russian underground shelters, nine ammunition deposits, eight river crossing and killed or injured 439 enemy soldiers.

Based on these notable endeavors, the unit was also sent in delicate missions abroad.

In August 2023, 100 soldiers, most members in the Timur unit, were sent to Sudan to help elongate the rebels supported by the Russian Wagner Paramilita group in Khartoum, in the middle of the civil war in this country.

By expanding the front line between Ukraine and Russia to Africa, the commanders trained Sudanese army soldiers in the drone war and new technologies, performed nocturnal raids and contributed to the recovery of the land.

“We have no borders in the place where we can work-in the busy territories or anywhere in the world,” said Lieutenant-Colonel Timur for Ukrainean Pravda in February 2024.

“Wherever there are soldiers, officers or persons involved in the special services of the Russian Federation, we reach them,” he added.
