The meeting between the presidents of the US and Russia will take place on August 11-17, being approved following the meeting on Wednesday with Vladimir Putin with Steven Witkoff, Trump's special envoy, reports the Russian Kommersant. The host country was not established, but Vladimir Putin said on Thursday that the United Arab Emirates are a suitable location, according to Reuters.
Turkey has hosted in recent years several rounds of peace negotiations between Russian and Ukrainian delegations, but Turkish President Recep Erdogan said on Thursday that he has no information about a meeting next week between Trump and Putin on his country.
One day after the Kremlin meeting between Trump's and Vladimir Putin's special envoy, the Kremlin Foreign Policy counselor, Iuri Usakov, announced that the American part proposed a meeting that the Russian leader agreed. The last meeting between the leaders of the two countries took place in 2021, when Joe Biden and Vladimir Putin met in Switzerland.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Wednesday that “we still have many things to do” before a meeting between Trump and Putin.
After the information about the Trump meeting – Putin appeared in the American press, the White House clarified that the US president was declared “open” at a meeting with Vladimir Putin, as well as with Ukrainian president Volodimir Zelenski.
Putin does not reject a meeting with Zelenski but puts conditions
Vladimir Putin said he did not oppose a meeting with Volodimir Zelenski, according to the Russian Tass State Agency. However, the necessary conditions for such contacts must be created, the Russian president said in a conversation with journalists, after a Kremlin meeting with the leader of the United Arab Emirates, Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
“I have often said that I have nothing against I have nothing in general against a meeting, it is possible,” Putin said. “But for this to happen, certain conditions must be created. Unfortunately, we are still far from creating such conditions.”
The Kremlin has repeatedly emphasized that the Russian part is prepared for a meeting between Putin and Zelenski, but for this many preparatory efforts must be made. Kiev said he was prepared at any time for such a meeting.
According to the claims of counselor Iuri Usakov, the US mentioned the possibility of a trilateral meeting between Putin, Zenski and Donald Trump. However, Moscow left this option without a response and asked the parties to focus on a bilateral Russia summit.
