On Wednesday, the Italian government issued a consent to the construction of a bridge over the Sicily connecting with Calabria Strait of the Messin. It will be the longest single -span bridge in the world. It is planned to commission it in 2032.


The construction of a crossing over the Messin Strait has been considered since the 1960s, in the intention of planners, the construction would be a serious impulse for the economic development of the South of Italy.
The Giorgia Meloni government treated the project priority – for the construction of the budget EUR 13.5 billion to be allocated within 10 years. Plans assume that the 3.7 km bridge will be completed in 2032.

At the head of the consortium building the bridge stands Italian giant of building vebuild. The company is known, among others from the implementation of the artificial lake in the futuristic Megamieście Neom in the Saudi Arabia.
In accordance with the estimates, the construction of a bridge over the Messi Strait will provide about 100,000 new jobs. The new connection is to be a quick road and rail alternative to the current ferry crossing.

The Italian government decided to give green light to a project, despite the opposition from some environmental protection organizations. It is also controversial that the construction site is a seismically active area.
Preparatory works, including archaeological and geological, are expected to start in full swing. (PAP)
