Kelemen Hunor, on the option of becoming prime minister: “We are still in Romania” / The UDMR leader says that the PSD-UDMR scenario “does not exist”

President Kelemen Hunor rejected on Monday evening both the idea that he could become prime minister in a future government, as well as the variants of a PSD-UDMR minority executive or a technocrat government. The UDMR leader said that a minority cabinet “must be voted for by someone” and a technocrat government would be “abandoned at the first turn”.
UMDR president, Kelemen Hunor, was asked, on Monday evening, on Antena 3 CNN, if he would accept the position of prime minister, given that he is one of the few political leaders who maintains dialogue with both the head of the PSD, Sorin Grindeanu, and the leader of the PNL, Ilie Bolojan.
“I am honored by what you say, but we have a problem. My name is Kelemen Hunor. We are still in Romania. We are not discussing that we are after USR as a parliamentary percentage. PSD, PNL, USR, UDMR. Now I am talking about the current coalition. But I think we are far from finding such a variant to accept, to propose such a variant. And here we must stop with speculations, that is not the case”, explained Kelemen Hunor, quoted by News.ro.
Kelemen Hunor rejects the option of a PSD-UDMR government
Kelemen Hunor also rejected the scenario of a minority government consisting of PSD, UDMR and national minorities.
“No, this variant does not exist. I do not know where they are circulated, but I tell you that they do not exist,” said Kelemen Hunor.
The UDMR leader also commented on the option of an executive made up of PNL, USR, UDMR and national minorities.
“This is how we are at the moment, the interim government,” Kelemen Hunor pointed out, quoted by Agerpres.
“But it must be voted for. The minority government must be voted for by someone. The PNL-USR-UDMR-minorities government – who will be the prime minister? Who will be the president's proposal, that that person must gather 233 votes? The PSD said that it will not vote for a minority government. Ok. So this option fails. At least on the first attempt. We go to the first attempt, because in Romania we have to get used to going, as he said, step by step, a former president. And the other option – assumed by the PSD. We cannot rule out any of these options at the moment. There is no political reasoning for such a formula at the moment (…) There is no way to go back to a formula in which you were put down two weeks ago,” said the UDMR leader.
“The technocrat government will be abandoned at the first turn”
The UDMR president also ruled out the option of a technocratic government for the transition period, arguing that such an executive would not have real political support.
“No, by no means,” he replied, when asked if he saw this solution as possible.
“The technocratic government can be sworn in, so it's not a problem, that it will be voted in Parliament, if not on the first try, on the second try. It's just that a technocratic government will be abandoned in the first 'curve', because it has no political responsibility. You realize, a technocratic government and everyone in the opposition – that this will happen practically, without us inventing the wheel. Because, if the politicians are not in the government, where are they in the opposition? These are the two options. Ok, a technocrat government, but at the first more dangerous turn that government will be abandoned, because everyone will feel in opposition”, declared Kelemen Hunor.
