A zoo in Denmark has asked people to donate their pets that I no longer want-but not to take care of them, but to offer them as food for the predators hosted there, reports Sky News.
The Aalborg Zoo in the Northern Jutland has published this unusual call on Facebook and on its website.
The post states that small live animals, such as chickens, rabbits and guinea pigs, which are “an important part of the diet of our predators, especially of European laughter, which needs a whole prey, similar to the one they would hunt in the wild, can be accepted.”
The representatives of the Zoo garden explain that if people have animals that need to be removed “for various reasons”, they can bring a maximum of four small animals at a time.
The animals are euthanized by qualified personnel and then used as food.
“In the zoos, we have the responsibility to imitate the natural trophic chain of animals, both for their well -being and for professional integrity,” writes in post. “Nothing is lost and we provide natural behavior, nutrition and well -being of our predators,” adds the representatives of the zoo.
The institution specifies that it will accept horses with a height of less than 147 cm and which have a health book.
In the statement, the Zoo in Aalborg added: “For many years, at the Aalborg zoo, we feed the carnivores with smaller pets.” When they are raised carnivores, it is necessary to provide meat, preferably with fur, bones, etc., to give them a more natural diet. Reasons to be used in this way.
The British publication notes that there have been cases where animals that died in a zoo or were slaughtered from healthy local specimens have become food for predators.
In 2014, the Copenhagen Zoo aroused controversy by euthanizing an 18 -month -old giraffe, called Marius, and nourishing lions with its body.
At that time, the zoo said that it did this from the obligation to avoid consanguinization. An online petition with thousands of signatures failed to save the giraffe.
In 2023, the Leipzig Zoo sacrificed a 15 -year -old zebra and nourished the lions with its body. The director explained that the institution tried to find a new home for zebra, but failed.
