The Diplomatic Mission of the United States in Nigeria informed on Monday that consular officials were instructed to refuse to release visas if there are grounds to think that the main reason for the visit is the birth of a child and obtaining American citizenship for a newborn baby.

“The use of a visa to travel to birth in the United States to obtain American citizenship is not allowed. Consular officials will reject a visa application if they have reason to think that this is your intention,” warned Nigerians Washington.
Many African parents who have tourist visas travel to the United States to give birth to children, often expecting the US government support in covering the costs of treatment.
AND According to American immigration law, children born in American territory automatically acquire citizenshipregardless of citizenship or immigration status of parents. The 14th amendment to the Constitution speaks of it. But in the spring of 2025, US President Donald Trump said that he did not think that children born in the United States should receive American citizenship by undocumented immigrants. Earlier, in February 2020, the United States introduced new visa regulations limiting labor tourism, stating that foreign pregnant women trying to give birth to a child in the country for citizenship will no longer be entitled to visas.
On Monday, in the post on Platform X, the United States diplomats emphasized that Nigerians applying for a visa must be sincere as to the destination, and warned that misleading as to the intention of the trip could have long -term immigration consequences. And these pregnant women from Nigeria are the most common to the USA, where over 760 thousand. Americans declare Nigerian origin.
Earlier, similar warnings appeared on the pages of the embassies of other African countries, including Liberia and Uganda.
On the first day of July, the warning at X was posted by the US embassy in Kampala in Uganda, whose government supported Washington's efforts and also warned its citizens against such travels.
Parents from Liberia were warned against this procedure by the American embassy in Monrovia in May. However, in local media you can still find ads: “Childbirth in the United States has a number of benefits, including access to high -quality healthcare and automatically obtaining American citizenship for a child. Our experts have many years of experience in advising on this type of matters. Contact us today under the number …”.
The procedure called delivery tourism is practiced not only by African families. But in many countries of this continent there are companies that specialize in it and organize such trips, charging high fees for them.
