$ 750 billion for American energy. The EC responds to critics

This declaration is part of the commercial agreement that Trump and von der Leyen announced on Sunday in Scotland. The head of the EC declared that the Union would increase the purchases of liquefied natural gas, oil, nuclear fuels and technologies from the USA. By the end of 2028, the value of these purchases is to reach $ 750 billion – $ 250 billion per year.
As the spokeswoman for the EC explained, “The value of LNG, oil, nuclear fuel and US services from the US is already $ 90-100 billion a year.” In her opinion, achieving higher values will be possible, taking into account, among others Infrastructure investments and a departure from energy from Russia. In 2024, the EU paid Russia for fossil fuels and nuclear energy EUR 23 billion – funds that are now to be sent to American companies.
According to the commission data, in 2024, EU countries brought 101.7 billion cubic meters of LNG, of which as many as 45.3 billion came from the USA. Only in the first half of this year the import of the US reached 37 billion cubic meters.
EC: Energy agreement with the USA is real to implement in full
The EU currently has infrastructure that allows you to import more than twice as much LNG than before. From 2022, 12 new LNG terminals were launched in Europe and 6 more were expanded, which translated into an increase in import abilities by 70 billion cubic meters.
Itkonen has rejected the allegations that the EC agreement from the US was threatened with LNG overparted on the market. – “We will not dictate to companies what they buy and what they want. What we have done for years and continue to eliminate the bottleneck and regulatory bottlenecks” The spokeswoman for the EC said.
She also noted that the calculations presented to the American side were “the fruit of deep analyzes and consultations with energy companies”. According to her, in the amount of $ 750 billion, investments in the nuclear energy sector are also foreseen. – “Several nuclear energy projects are discussed, which are located at different stage of advancement,” she pointed out.
The governments of some Member States are already conducting talks with American companies on possible cooperation. – “We see some signs of interest in investments in nuclear energy. In most cases, talks about the use of American technology are held – both in terms of large -scale reactors and small modular reactors” – noted Itkonen.
