ZUS care allowance is granted in the event of illness of loved ones


Care allowance is a form of financial support that the Social Insurance Institution pays for. The benefit is granted to a employed person who looks after a sick family member. The length of the care period for which you receive a specific compensation depends on many people who are subject to care.

Parents of sick children who have to look after and thus do not provide professional duties most often exercise the right to care benefit. The benefit is also paid in other situations that force guardians to stay at home with your child (e.g. closing the nursery, school). Money can also be obtained by a person dealing with a sick family member – spouse or parent.
Care allowance It aims to protect the insured person against loss of remuneration while taking care of a sick child or other sick family member. Pursuant to the basic provisions, a document confirming the right to pay the benefit is usually a certificate issued by a doctor.
Care allowance in 2025. Who has the right to benefit and how to receive it?
The amount of care allowance was set at 80 percent. calculated from the base of the sickness benefit. A person who is applying for a benefit must be employed under an employment contract, order, agency, output, business activity, be a farmer or a clergy. Without this, it will not be possible to obtain an allowance, even if you need to take care of a loved one.
As the ZUS explains, the employee is entitled to the employee no longer than by:
- 60 days in a calendar year – if a person looks after a healthy child under 8 years old or a sick child up to 14 years old, including a disabled child at this age, or
- 14 days in a calendar year – if a person looks after a child over 14 years of age or other sick family member,
- 30 days in the calendar year – if a person looks after a sick child with a disabled child who is at least 14 years old but is under 18 years old; Or a disabled child who is over 8 years old but was under 18, if as a result of childbirth, illness or stay in the hospital of a spouse or parent of a child who constantly look after a child, they cannot look after a disabled child.

To receive help, you must meet the conditions specified in the regulations. As ZUS explains, the total paying period of care allowance cannot exceed 60 days in the calendar year. It does not depend on the number of people entitled to the allowance, the number of children or family members who require care. The period of receiving additional care allowance is not included in the 60 and 14 days limit in the calendar year.
If you want to apply for a care allowance, you must submit an appropriate application along with attachments at the Social Insurance Institution (ZUS) competent for the contribution payer. In a situation where the employer insures less than 20 people, the Applicant must provide documents in person.
Care allowance is granted for each day (also free under regulations), in which the authorized person looks after the child or other family member.
