The project that provides for the passing of the revolution market and The monument of the heroes of the Revolution in the administration will be withdrawn from the agenda of the General Council of Bucharest Wednesday, announced the interim mayor Stelian Bujduveanu. The reason invoked by this is the “force of dialogue”.
“The Square of the Revolution belongs to the people. We have carefully pursued the reactions and positions expressed in the public space regarding the project on the potential transfer to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of an area of 2,239 square meters, a green space right in front of the MAI building, already used by this institution.
For clarity: it is a distinct lot, not the front parking or the rest of the revolution market. The area of 6,613 sqm that forms the essence of the market would remain in full in the administration of the municipality of Bucharest ”, wrote Stelian Bujduveanu on his Facebook page.
The interim mayor of the capital says that he will withdraw from the agenda of the CGMB meeting the draft decision that provides for the crossing of the Revolution Market, from the administration of the General City Hall in the administration of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and announces “a public debate”.
“I believe in the force of the dialogue and I know how important the public spaces are for a living capital. Therefore, my decision is to withdraw the project on the agenda of the General Council and to launch a real and transparent public debate.
As we have supported publicly in 2023, the Revolution Square must become a pedestrian, accessible, lively, reflecting memory, dignity and values for which this place has a deep historical significance for Bucharest ”, writes the politician on the socialization page.
The clarifications of the interim mayor come after the journalists Bulletin de Bucharest wrote that, in the meeting of the General Council on Wednesday, the draft decision in question will be located. The Ministry of Internal Affairs, an institution under the management of which would enter the Square of the Revolution and the Heroes Monument, wants to create “a secure perimeter” in which neither cars nor pedestrians have access.
Alternative – a green space for Bucharest residents
The report proposed a three -stage redevelopment solution, so that the public space became really representative for the city.
The report recommends pedestrian or limiting traffic in the Revolution Square on weekends, making a new monument dedicated to the revolution, instead of the popular “potato”, created after public consultation. “The market could become an outdoor museum, with tactile maps, informative panels, QR codes,” the report says.
The document also proposes that the parking from the Ministry of Interior be transformed into a leisure area with urban vegetation and furniture. The street association for people mentioned three stages in which the Revolution Square became friendly with Bucharest and tourists.
In the first stage, in the short term (3-6 months), the report proposes to close road traffic at the weekend and to transform the parking lot into a temporary green space, part of the open street initiative. Of the only 137 parking spaces 59 are currently reserved for MIA employees.
“The barriers installed in front of the parking do not have a building permit. The purpose is to redirect the employees of the institutions in the area to the underground parking lots and to abolish the 137 parking spaces managed by the Municipal Parking Company in the area”, it is stated in the report “Garden Revolution – for Bucharest, for all”.
In the medium term (1-2 years), it is recommended to launch an international architecture competition, to generate creative solutions and suitable for the historical context.
At the same time, the traffic is proposed by initiating a public auction for a traffic study to evaluate the impact of car traffic in the Revolution Square and George Enescu Square, by redirecting car traffic and public transport on Calea Victoriei through the Palace Hall.
And in the long term (3-5 years), it is desired to include the project in the General Urban Plan of Bucharest (PUG), so that the vision is sustainable and legally assumed.
The Ministry of Interior wants to close the market of the Revolution of Public Access. It also requires the transfer from the City Hall to create “a secure perimeter”
