In Zheleznogorsk, the second stage of the experimental and demonstration center for the processing of irrigated nuclear fuel was launched

In Zheleznogorsk, in the Federal State Unitary Enterprise “Mining and Chemical Plant” (GHK, part of the “Ecological Solutions” division of the Rosatom State Corporation) was put into operation of the second launch complex of the experimental and demonstration center (ODC) for the processing of the worked out nuclear fuel (OIS).

The second complex is an industrial module (the first was experimental). Its key task, in addition to processing OHS, is to obtain the source data and check the unique equipment for the design of the factory for the processing of high -power OHS. The construction of the second launch complex ended at the end of 2024.

“The launch of the second stage of the ODC is an important part of our great work to create a whole cluster in the Krasnoyarsk Territory, which will participate in the closure of the nuclear fuel cycle,” said Alexei Likhachev, general director of the Rosatom State Corporation at the launch ceremony. – As in other areas of development of nuclear technologies, Russia becomes a pioneer here: for the first time in the world we carry out on an industrial scale the closure of the nuclear fuel cycle due to a significant reduction in the share of natural uranium and re -use of processing products of the spent nuclear fuel. In the coming decades, the experimental and demonstration center at the mining and chemical plant will become one of the key links for the entire nuclear industry in the process of transition to atomic energy technologies of the IV generation. After the second stage of ODC to the design capacity, the plant will be able to process about 200 tons of OHS per year. Given the possibilities for the processing of the Mayak production association and the new industries planned by us, this will allow Russia to ensure the start of the work of the IV generation in the next 15 years. ”

It is expected that after developing technologies and achieving the design parameters of the ODC will be the world's first fuel processing plant without the formation of liquid radioactive waste.

The Mining and Chemical Plant (FSUE FSUE “GKK”) is part of the Division “Ecological Solutions” by the State Corporation “Rosatom”. Located in ZAO Zheleznogorsk Krasnoyarsk Territory and is the key enterprise of Rosatom to create a technological complex of a closed nuclear fuel cycle (ZITC) based on new generation innovative technologies. In 2025, GHK celebrated the 75th anniversary. The historical mission of the plant was the implementation of the state defense order for the development and allocation of weapons plutonium to ensure the country's strategic and nuclear security. With the participation of the plant, a “nuclear shield” of the country was created.
