The Council of Ministers on Friday adopted a bill, which is to enable financial support for shipowners related to the ban on catching cod in the Baltic. Planned regulations assume that this year the government will allocate PLN 50 million for this purpose. Aid will be able to use, among others Suggestions scrapping their ships.

The Chancellery of the Prime Minister announced on Friday that the government adopted a draft law on state aid addressed to the shipowners of floating units in connection with the introduction of a ban on cod fishing in the Baltic Sea. The project assumes the government's help for shipowners in connection with the EU ban on catching cod in the Baltic. In 2025 alone, this is to be a total of PLN 50 million, and the government's estimates indicate that it will apply to about 98 units.
“The EU decision from 2019 was aimed at saving the Atlantic Cod resource in the Baltic Sea. It is one of the most valuable species of fish, which was the source of the income of many fishermen. However, excessive fishing caused that there are too few fish in the sea” – emphasized in the KPRM communication, adding that The ban is extended every yearand this situation causes losses for shipowners, whose half in the Baltic Sea concerned mainly cod.
Support is to be offered, among others, if the shipowner makes a swimming unit or free of charge will provide it with public administration or a public school for purposes not related to the conduct of economic activity. Applications can be submitted to the directors of maritime offices.
“The amount of support will depend, among others, on the volume of the floating unit, calculated according to the length, width and height of a given unit,” it was informed. Support will be provided only once for a given unit. (PAP)
