coal mining up. The biggest increase in 13 months

On Friday, the Central Statistical Office presented the latest report on the production of “more important” products. Coal was mentioned first among them. Hard coal was produced by 4.9%. more year to year, i.e. 3,784 thousand tons, and brown by 4.1%. more y/y, i.e. 3,414 thousand tone.
We checked back and there has not been such a situation in which total coal (hard and lignite) extraction increased year-on-year since February 2025, i.e. for 13 months. 4.2% more people work in mining. fewer people than a year earlieri.e. 69 thousand, so our mining efficiency indicators, which are poor on a global scale, have clearly improved over the last year. And the coal itself was needed more than a year earlier, because the winter was colder this year.
However, if we count the production for the entire first quarter, and not only for March, the situation looks worse. The extraction of hard coal from January to March amounted to 10.7 million tons, and lignite – 10.4 million tons, which means a decrease by 5 percent, respectively. y/y and 7.3 percent rdr.
Sunflower oil, toast and pasta
Significant year-on-year increases, both in March and in the entire quarter, were recorded in the production of pasta, sunflower oil and toast. In the case of all of the products mentioned, the availability of an increased amount of raw material from Ukraine may have had an impact.

Polish companies produced 941 tons of pasta in March, i.e. 879 percent. more y/y On a quarterly basis, the increase was 708 percent. up to 3,293 tons.
In the case of sunflower oil, production was 246 tons in March, i.e. 512 percent. more y/y and 801 tons in 1Q26, i.e. by 291%. y/y more.
Finally, 587 tons of toast were produced in Poland, i.e. 481 percent. more y/y From January to March, production amounted to 1,238 tons (+351% y/y).
What is also noteworthy on a quarterly basis is the increase in salt production to 323,000. tons, i.e. by 240 percent year on year more, which, as in the case of coal, is related to the cold winter. The production of artificial fiber fabrics was further increased – 73.8 thousand. sq m in the first quarter, i.e. by 246%. more y/y

Finally, the production of ready-made meals was characterized by high dynamics, 17,000 of which were produced. tons, i.e. by 261%. more year to year.
The other side of the coin
There is also the other side of the coin, i.e. products that are no longer produced in Poland. First on the list are fabrics made from man-made filament yarns, the production of which decreased by 72.2% year on year. up to 768 thousand square meters, external antennas for radio and television reception (-71.7% yoy to 7.9 thousand pieces) and antibiotics (-67.9% yoy to only 169 kg).
Less by as much as 66.8%. YoY, women's jackets were produced in the first quarter, i.e. 21.8 thousand. pieces. By 65 percent the production of fired clay bricks decreased up to 5085 cubic meters, which, considering the higher energy cost of this product, is understandable given the high electricity prices.
