The catastrophic situation with water in the Donbass. What happens to reservoirs

In the summer of 2025, the situation with water supply in the territories occupied by Russia of Donetsk and Lugansk regions became so sharp that even the most pro -Russian bloggers spoke about this, the publication notes.

Journalists analyzed satellite pictures of five large reservoirs and five smaller reservoirs in the Donetsk region using the Planet Labs service, and came to the conclusion that over the past three and a half years-since the aggressor Russia country in February 2022 began a full-scale invasion of Ukraine-nine of them noticeably adequate.

Most of these reservoirs are located near the regional center of Donetsk, where the situation is especially intense. Since July 21, water supply to Donetsk and Makeevka should be carried out every three days for four hours, and in a number of other settlements of the region, including Mariupol, once every two days. At the same time, local residents complain that such a schedule is not observed. According to them, in some small cities, for example, in Yuzhnkomunarovsk, there are no water for more than two weeks.

Before the occupation in Donetsk, water was supplied daily, but in mining towns, 40-50 km from the capital of the region, the situation was much worse. After the beginning of the occupation in a number of mining cities, the regular supply of water and electricity actually stopped. In addition to some of them, a system of sewer manifolds was not established until 2014.

There are not enough reservoirs and groundwater in the region to provide the entire region, including due to an extensive network of mines, until the supply of water from the Seversky Donets river is restored, a former employee of the Donbass Water told reporters.

The administration is trying to solve the problem of lack of water manually, bringing water to cities and areas. Some users of social networks complain about the quality of water supplied, they say that it is muddy, with dirty sediment, spoils plumbing and pipes, it cannot be used for cooking or personal hygiene, but it is paid as drinking. At the same time, the prices for water supply in the territory of the Donetsk region controlled by the Russian Federation were raised from July.
