Poland's relations with Israel are complicated, but Israelis must understand that Poland was a victim of the Holocaust – said Thomas Rose, nominated for the position of the US ambassador in Warsaw on Tuesday. He announced that he would try to repair relations between the two countries and announced that he would keep political neutrality as an ambassador.
Rose performed on Tuesday in front of the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee as part of hearing before approving his nomination by this Chamber of Congress together with candidates for ambassadors in Belgium and Argentina. In his statements, a conservative journalist spoke about Poland in superlatives, presenting it as an exemplary ally of America, a European leader in terms of defense, energy security and cyber security.
– Poland is a shield of NATO's eastern flank, an unusual ally, an extraordinary nation, proud, sovereign, very jealous of its culture and incredibly pro -American. Of course, in Poland there are various internal political disputes, but at 30,000 feet when it comes to existential issues, they understand this. They outdo each other to be more American – said Rose. He said that Poland “is not only an ally but a family.” He could not mention any things that the Polish authorities should do and what they are not doing at the moment. At some point, Rose also suggested that the government of Donald Tusk announced the restoration of consumption to the army; It was probably about announcements of voluntary military training.
Known for his strongly pro -Israel's views, Rose – who, he said, owed his nomination to the support of the pro -Israel billionaire and sponsor of Republicans Miriam Adelson – he also said about Poland's relations with Israel and about the issue of restitution of the property of the heirs of the victims of the Holocaust. As he said, according to the popular opinion, because it was in Poland to the Holocaust, “in some way Poland is responsible for it.”
– They were Nazis, they were Germans, they were their helpers. Israelis must understand this better. And Poles must better understand Israeli sensitivity, “Rose said. As he announced, he is very interested in reconciling both countries and believes that he can do it. Referring to the restitution of property, he said that this is an important issue, but also emphasized that “it is very, very important that we all remember who was the victim” – Poland was not the perpetrator of the Holocaust, but his victim.
– From 22 countries that Nazi Germans occupied or managed through puppet regimes, the only country that was conquered and never gave up was Poland. The Polish government moved to London, where it served in exile – he added.
Rose was also asked by the deputy head of the commission, the democrat of Jeanne Shaheen, about their entries in social media criticizing the Polish government or favorable PiS. He emphasized that he was not ashamed of his entries – which neither he nor Shaheen mentioned directly – and that he would write them regardless of who would be the prime minister in Poland. Already after the announcement of the nomination, Rose spoke on Platform X, including criticizing plans to introduce digital tax by the Ministry of Digitization.
– We have excellent relations with Donald Tusk and his civic coalition. We have great relations with PiS, an opposition coalition. If there is one country in Europe where America has no problem, it is Poland – he noted. Pressed by the declaration that he will not favor any of the parties, he undertook to do so, but added:
– If the United States has an interest in some case, if this has a direct impact on the United States, I will be the energetic defender of the president and his program.
Listening to the Senate Commission is a key step to approving presidential nominees as ambassadors, but not the last. In the vast majority of cases, the approval of the nomination by the Senate is a formality, and the opposition to Rose's candidacy was not openly raised by none of the senators. Already on Wednesday, Rose and the nominates performing with it can get the support of the Foreign Affairs Committee. At a later date, the entire Senate will be voted.
Thomas Rose is a right -wing journalist, former adviser to vice president Mike Pence and editor -in -chief of the Jerusalem Post. For years, he was also the host of the right -wing show together with the former republican presidential candidate GARYM Bauer.
