Procopius Reaper

The holy great martyr Procopius, whose memory is celebrated on this day, lived in Jerusalem during the time of Emperor Diocletian.

In Rus', Prokopius was known as a reaper, or a harvesting man, because with his name day they began to reap rye. Starting to work, the peasants usually served a prayer service in honor of the saint. After that they set the tables, arranged treats.

People believed that on this day Kamakh appeared in the fields (the so-called Chervets, an insect-pest). They said that she was moving into a ball that rides on the ground. If such a tangle falls under his feet, this portends him well -being for a whole year. Therefore, many specially went to the field in the field – to look for Kamah.

With Procopius, she began to ripen blueberries. This was considered a true sign that winter bread is ready for harvest. “Blueberries ripen – the harvest is famously,” the peasants said. Children usually walked on blueberries, as adults were busy in the field. “In the berry year of deed,” such a saying appeared not in vain. It was not simple to collect this berry – mosquitoes interfered. “Blueberries ripen under mosquito songs,” people noted.

Meanwhile, blueberries were considered almost a wonderful berry, which has amazing healing properties.

Continued for Procopius and harvested livestock feed. “There is a lot of haymaking on a sharp braid,” the peasants said, going into the meadows.
