Ten people, suspected of being involved in the start of vegetation fires in Turkey, were arrested by the authorities, Ali Yerlikaya announced on Friday. The flames included several regions of the country in the last week. Disasters would have been intentionally provoked.

According to officials, at least two people lost their lives in the province of Izmir, located on the western coast of Turkey, following the flames that have expanded rapidly due to the high temperatures, the strong wind and the low humidity. Extinguishing efforts involved both ground crews, specialized planes and helicopters, notes Reuters.

Minister Ali Yerlikaya said that of the 65 fires erupted since June 26, some were caused by negligent human activities, such as welding works near the wooded areas, the use of agricultural machines in the vicinity of the forests and the uncontrolled burning of the waste from the gardens.

For another 15 suspects, legal procedures are in progress.

Forestry Minister Ibrahim Yumakli said that nine of the ten active on Friday fires were largely under control, but the fire in the province of Hatay, in the southeast of the country, continues to be a challenge for firefighters and will require interventions during the night.
