The firefighters were fighting on Saturday with a vegetation fire on the Greek island Evia in the Aegean Sea, the second largest of Greece, where the fire encompassed the forest and forced the evacuation of two villages, reports Reuters, taken by News.ro.

Over 160 firefighters, along with 46 trucks and five planes, were held in the south of Evia, east of Athens, to extinguish the fire that broke out on Friday evening.

Evia was on a list of several Greek regions that were on the maximum alert for vegetation fires due to the strong winds and the lifts placed on Saturday.

The authorities ordered the evacuation of the villages of Tsakei and the seasonal settlement on the Limnionas coast in the early hours of the morning.

South Evia is a poorly populated area, with rough terrain, agricultural land and popular seaside.

The fire there is the most recent in a series of forest fires powered by strong winds and this week's dry conditions, while a large part of Europe is drunk under a wave of cancule, which the authorities have linked to at least eight deaths on the continent.

Another vegetation fire, from the south of Crete, who laughed forests and olive plantations starting on Wednesday and led to the temporary evacuation of thousands of inhabitants and tourists, is largely controlled, an official of the Fire Brigade.

Tourism is an important source of income in Greece, and the fires hit at the beginning of the peak season of summer holidays.

The temperatures in Greece were to reach up to 38 degrees Celsius on Saturday, the Greek Meteorological Service announced.
