On Friday, the clouds of heavy smoke and ash covered the sky above the Strei Valley in Hunedoara, following the outbreak of a fire at the garbage dump of the ecological deposit in Hunedoara County. Locals were alerted to avoid the area.

Firefighters had an extremely difficult mission on Friday afternoon, after a fire broke out the garbage pit of Hunedoara. The flames quickly expanded over several hectares, raising dense and ash on top of the Strei Valley.

The most affected by the pollution were the inhabitants of Băcia village, near the ecological deposit, during which the garbage pit was arranged, but the smell of burnt waste and the smoke was widespread to the cities of Călan and Simeria, nearby. The deposit is about 15 kilometers from Hunedoara and Deva, and the population was alerted to avoid the area.

Strong fire, favored by the heat and wind

On Friday, extinguishing crews from the Inspectorate for Emergency Situations Hunedoara, from the subunits in Deva, Petroșani, Hunedoara, Orăștie and Brad, intervened for several hours to liquidate the fire broke out at the landfill in the Bârcea Mare – Băcia area.

According to ISU Hunedoara, it was manifested with a very large smoke release, which is why a RO-Alert message was issued for the inhabitants of the area.

“A warning message was transmitted, given that the smoke can be toxic, and for those who transit the road area it was requested to release the access roads for the special vehicles. The firefighters' intervention was particularly difficult, due to the strong wind and the excessive heat, but also that the warehouse of the waste, which could be in the same way. Also acted to limit the expansion of the fire, for its location and, subsequently, for liquidation ”said Lucian Morogan, the spokesman of ISU Hunedoara.

Until Friday, in the evening, the fire had not been liquidated.

The ecological deposit from Bârcea Mare – Băcia was inaugurated in 2017, in the area of ​​a former military unit on the Strei Valley. The project, carried out by the Hunedoara County Council with European funding, had a total value of approximately 70 million euros and aimed at the construction of a modern waste management center, which replaced the old trash pits in Hunedoara county.

The deposit covers an area of ​​about 26 hectares and has a total capacity of over 4 million cubic meters. Serves the entire area of ​​Hunedoara County.
