Four people died, 38 are missing and 23 survived after a ferry transporting 65 people sank near Bali, the search and rescue agency in Indonesia announced on Thursday, Reuters reported.

KMP Tunu Pratama Jaya sank almost half an hour after leaving the port of Banyuwangi in the province of East Java on Wednesday evening, on the way to Bali, the Agency announced on Thursday.

The ship transports 53 passengers and 12 crew members, as well as 22 vehicles, the agency said.

The searches of the missing persons are in progress, although they are made difficult by the strong currents and the strong wind, the agency added.

No official statement was made regarding the nationality of the passengers, but a list broadcast by the Metro news channel indicated that there were no foreigners on board.

Feribots are an ordinary means of transport in Indonesia, an archipelago of over 17,000 islands, and accidents are common, because Laxa safety standards often allow overloading of ships without adequate rescue equipment.

In 2023, a small ferry was overturned near the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia, killing at least 15 people.
