Forget everything that you used to say about watering plums. It turned out that the “gentle” approach with frequent but superficial irrigation makes only worse. It is because of this that the fruits are small, fresh or cracking before the collection. But I want the plums to be juicy and fleshy.
Why is the usual watering does not work
Frequent watering seem to be a rational approach. This should reduce the risk that the tree will dry out. But in the heat, water from the surface quickly evaporates, really not reaching the roots. Small roots that appear due to such moisture are weak and quickly burn in the sun. And the real “working” roots of the plums are located at a depth of 60–80 cm. And only moisture should get there.
How to water correctly
The secret is simple. It is necessary to water not often, but abundantly. One good watering every 7-10 days gives a tree more than daily water procedures. An adult plum needs at least 50–70 liters at a time. But you need to pour water not under the barrel, where it goes deeper and does not get the roots. It is better to water in a circle, along the edge of the crown. It is there that there are roots absorbent moisture.
How to check moisture
A day after watering, dig a hole next to the tree to the depth of the bayonet of the shovel. If below is wet and cool, then everything is in order. If dry, then the water did not reach the target, and watering will have to be repeated.
When to water
It is best to carry out water procedures early in the morning or evening. At this time, there is no strong heat and moisture does not evaporate. She calmly goes deep into the soil to the roots.
What gives such an approach
Deep watering makes the fruits large, juicy and sweet. Plums do not crack after the rains, but become only tastier. All this can be achieved without fertilizers, stimulants and excess fuss. Only the correct watering, carried out at the right time.
