For several days, the Mamaia resort has been facing an invasion of gargoyles, which are present everywhere, on the clothes of tourists, mattresses and even the people in the sun, the discomfort being obvious.

However, this species of butterflies are considered useful, used in the biological control of pests, for example of aphids.

Explanations for the multiplication of the butterflies is quite simple: when the population of the prey grows, it also increases that of the predator. In this case, the prey is represented by aphids (plant lice), and the predator – the gargoyles, insects that feed on them.

The warmer climate and gentle winters favored the survival of aphid eggs, which led to a marked growth, especially on agricultural land. Thus, an ideal environment was created for the multiplication of the gargoyles, which now have abundant food. In addition, the gargoyles do not have many natural predators. In the urban environment, where the frogs, lizards and spiders are rare, the number of gossip is not under natural control.

Are not harmful, just upsetting

Unlike aphids, which affect agricultural crops, the gargoyles are actually beneficial. They do not harm the plants and are not a danger to humans – just a temporary discomfort, due to the large number and the tendency to shelter in buildings or on light colored objects.

Specialists say that insects are harmless and will disappear in a few days. “Fortunately, it is an indigenous species, about Coccinella Septempunctata, which practically gather many benefits, both crops and gardens, because these bubuses consume other smaller insects, those aphids or lice, which actually destroy both agricultural and gardens and trees ”,,” says biologist Răzvan Popescu-Mirceni.

The biologist also states that we are talking about a natural phenomenon, without any adverse effect on human health. Răzvan Popescu Mirceni also stated that they most likely hatched, “A large number of specimens were transformed from the puppets into adults and were brought with that atmospheric front that brought today and a little rain to Constanța”, says the biologist.
