Barnabas Day

On this day, the Orthodox Church celebrates the memory of St. Barnabas, the founder of the Cyprus Church, one of the apostles from seventy (among these “seventy” traditionally include the disciples of Jesus Christ and their disciples).

In Rus' they said: “Do not tear the grass on Barnabas.” It was believed that on this day on the grass, an unknown force rides through meadows. It is interesting that in this case, the rampant evil spirits were at noon, and not at night, as usual. It was said that demons into Barnabas divide the injects among themselves: to whom in the halls of the clamps and reins to confuse, to whom to come to children unknown illness, to whom to scare the human race, and to whom to fill the grass with poison.
