The chief commander of Ukraine's armed forces, Oleksandr Sîrski, warns that Russia could launch a new attack on Ukraine from Belarus, after the end of the joint military exercises “Zapad-2025”, planned for September. The statement was made in a discussion with the journalists, according to the Ukrainian publication Focus.
General Sîrski recalled that Russia used this type of strategy in February 2022, when Russian troops did not return to their permanent bases after Belarus common exercises. Instead, they launched the invasion in Ukraine using the Belarus territory as a starting point.
“After the common military exercises, the Russian troops remained on the territory of Belarus and attacked Ukraine. We cannot exclude the possibility that this scenario will be repeated ”said Sîrski.
What do military experts say
The military analyst Agil Rudamzade believes, however, that, at this moment, a Russian offensive on Kiev from Belarus is “impossible“He argues that”There are not enough attack troops nor the necessary logistical training ” for such a military operation.
Warings from Kiev
At the end of April, Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski launched a similar warning, saying that Russia could try a new offensive, using the pretext of military exercises.
“Such attacks have been triggered several times under the same pretext. The direction of a possible hit is, for the time being.”Zelenski said.
Belarus is preparing for the Russian system “Lișcina”
In this tense context, Minsk authorities announce the consolidation of military cooperation with Russia. Aleksandr Volfovici, the secretary of the Belarus Security Council, recently said that the Russian system “Lișcina” will be held on the territory of Belarus until the end of 2025. According to him, “”The necessary locations have already been established for its placement ”.
The situation on the northern border of Ukraine remains uncertain, and the Ukrainian authorities carefully monitor the movements of the Russian troops and the military activities carried out in Belarus.
