US President Donald Trump has announced, in a message on his social social network, that he asked his administration to reopen and modernize the emblematic prison, from the Gulf of San Francisco, to close the most violent criminals, AFP reports.

“For a long time, America is a victim to vicious, violent and recidivist criminals, the pleavy of society, who will never bring nothing but misery and suffering,” wrote the Republican billionaire.

“Therefore, I order today to the Penitentiary Bureau, as well as to the Department of Justice, the FBI and the Department for Internal Security, to reopen, to increase substantially and to rebuild Alcatraz to close them the most dangerous and violent criminals in America,” he added.

Donald Trump believes that the commissioning of the penitentiary, closed in March 1963, will serve as “symbol of law, order and justice.”

The prison, where the largest mafia chiefs were imprisoned, including Al Capone, was closed after only 29 years of service due to excessive operating costs, according to the US Penitentiary Bureau.

Located 2 kilometers from the coast, the former prison is now an emblematic tourist attraction of the Gulf of San Francisco, in California.

The US president made the crime fight a key element of his second term at the White House.
