Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan spoke on Sunday with his American counterpart, Donald Trump, and asked for “urgent actions” to prevent escalating the conflict between Israel and Iran, AFP reports.
“President Erdogan welcomed the recent comments of US President Trump about a resolution of the conflict between Israel and Iran … and stressed that urgent actions are needed to prevent a catastrophe that could inflame the entire region,” the Turkish presidency said in a statement.
During the telephone conversation, the second between the two leaders in 24 hours, said that “the spiral of violence triggered by the attacks of Israel on Iran caused irreparable economic and civil damages” and asked for measures to “stop this dangerous escalation”, the statement said.
At the same time, Recep Tayyip Erdogan told Donald Trump, who on Sunday said he was “open” to the possibility of playing Russian President Vladimir Putin a role as a conflict mediator, that he is prepared for “a facilitator”.
On Friday, after the outbreak of the conflict between Israel and Iran, the President of Turkey accused Israel of trying to attract the world into a “disaster”, urging the international community to stop, he said, the “banditism” of Israel.
The government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu “tries to draw our region and the whole world in disaster with its insane, aggressive and illegal actions,” Erdogan said on a post on X.
Recep Tayyip Erdogan, a vocal critic of Israel and a fervent supporter of the Palestinian cause, accused Israel of leading his “strategy to drown our region, especially Gaza, blood, tears and instability in a very dangerous stage.”
Also on Friday, the top ministers from Turkey, flanked by heads of the army and intelligence services, had a meeting with closed doors for discussions that “focused on the process that started with Israeli air attacks on Iran and their possible repercussions,” said a source from the Foreign Ministry of AFP.
