This is the first visit by Boris Pistorius in Ukraine since the government arrival led by the Conservative Friedrich Merz, after a visit in January, when he was part of the former government led by the Social Democrat Olaf Scholz.
Merz has firmly denounced the recent intensification of Russian attacks on this week's Ukrainian civilians. “These are not military targets, but acts of terror against the civilian population ”told the German prime minister in Berlin, talking about “Very serious war crimes”.
Boris Pistorius's visit takes place after an attack with Russian drones and rockets on Tuesday night on Wednesday, the second largest city in Ukraine, who killed three people and hurt more than 60. Also, at the beginning of the week, the largest Russian attack with Drone was reported since the beginning of the war. The Ukrainian Air Force said on Monday, June 9, that they intercepted a total of 479 drones and 20 Russian missiles during a record wave of blows during the night.
The visit takes place when the discussions between Russia and Ukraine regarding a possible conclusion of the conflict remain in a deadlock.
Boris Pistorius said he wants to find out about the situation in Ukraine and talk to the Government representatives about the additional military aid for the country attacked by Russia, according to Der Spiegel.
“We do our best to support Ukraine so that they can defend and reach a position where Russia is prepared for serious negotiations“He said before the visit to Kyiv.
Germany, the second largest financial aid provider to Ukraine, after the United States, promised a massive increase in military spending to support Kiev.
