The governor of the National Bank of Romania (BNR), Mugur Isarescu, participated, on June 2, at the event of commemoration of the Greek Catholic cardinal Iuliu Hossu in the Vatican, in the presence of Pope Leon XIV, the National Bank said on Wednesday.
On the occasion of the commemoration, the governor handed over to his sanctity Pope Leon XIV the silver currency dedicated to the 130th anniversary of the birth of Iuliu Hossu, launched by the NBR in the numismatic circuit in 2015.
The ceremony, which took place in the Sistine Chapel, was organized at the request of the Federation of Jewish Communities in Romania on the occasion of the five years since the visit of the late Pope Francis to Romania and the Beatification on the Freedom Plain of Seven Greek-Catholic Martyrs, including Iuliu Hossu.
The event brought to light the inheritance of the happy cardinal Iuliu Hossu, especially his testimony of faith and defense of the Jews during the Holocaust period.
