President Emmanuel Macron condemned on Tuesday “a wave of meaningless violence” after the incident that took place in front of a school in Nentent, northeast of France, writes AFP.

A 31-year-old didactic assistant died at the hospital after being stabbed several times during a patch search at the beginning of the school day on Tuesday, in front of a high school in Nentent, in the Haute-Marne department, northeast of France.

The suspect, “a 14 -year -old student without a criminal record”, was immediately immobilized by the gendarmes present, announced the chaumont prosecutor Denis Devallois, specifying that a gendarmerie was slightly injured.

The young man was placed in preventive arrest.

Who is the suspect

“He is a young man from a family in which both parents work, who do not have special difficulties,” said Minister of Education, Elisabeth Borne, stressing that “his teachers are completely shocked by what happened.”

The teenager had been at the beginning of the year “the object of two temporary exclusions for disturbing the class,” she said after meeting with teachers and students.

“I appreciate the calm and dedication of those who acted to immobilize the attacker and protect the students and the staff,” the minister wrote on social networks.

President Emmanuel Macron condemned the attack.

“While protecting their children, a didactic nurse has lost his life, a victim of a meaningless violence. The country is in mourning, and the government is mobilized to reduce crime,” said President Emmanuel Macron.

Why were the students' backpacks controlled

The check of the backpacks was “long planned” together with the Gendarmerie, “according to the Circular Retailleau-Borne,” the AFP Rectorate said.

Random checks were set up after a beating in March, which caused the death of a young man in front of a high school in Essonne.

The Minister of the Interior then promised several “discouragement and sanctions” near educational institutions.

The Ministry of National Education indicated on Tuesday that, between March 26 and May 23, 6,000 checks led to the confiscation of 186 knives, and 587 disciplinary councils took place in total for holding knives.

Shock in the school community, critics from the opposition

Élisabeth Allain-Moreno, the general secretary of the union of teachers, said that the teaching assistant “was simply doing his job, meeting the students at the entrance to school”.

She said that the attack “shows that nothing can be completely safe and that we have to focus on prevention.”

“It is impossible to be more vigilant for 24 hours a day. We cannot say that each student represents a danger or threat, otherwise we would not get out of bed in the morning,” said Jean-Rémi Girard, president of the National Union of Gymnasium Schools.

Marine Le Pen, the leader of the main opposition parties, also had a reaction, denouncing what she called “the normalization of extreme violence, encouraged by the apathy of the authorities”.

“It is not a week without a tragedy hitting a school. The French people have been tired and awaits a firm political response, without compromises and determined to the scourge of juvenile violence,” she said.
