Upon returning to the White House after a night spent at Camp David, Trump was asked by a reporter if Tom Homan, the border issues, should arrest Newsom.

Homan had threatened to arrest anyone who obstructs the efforts to apply immigration laws, including the governor.

“I would do it if I were Tom. I think it's great,” Trump replied. “Gavin likes advertising, but I think it would be a great thing,” Trump said.

While the city is facing the fourth day of protests against Trump's policies, Democrats and Republicans collided in what has become the hottest point of the aggressive efforts of the Republican administration to deport immigrants illegally to the country.

Governor Gavin Newsom, considered a potential democratic candidate for the presidency in 2028, promised that he would sue the federal government for mobilizing the National Guard, qualifying it as illegal. “This is exactly what Donald Trump wanted. He has set fire to the fire and acted illegally to put the national guard under federal control,” Newsom wrote on Monday. “We are suing,” he added.

What provides for the law

The federal law allows the president to mobilize the national guard in the case of the country's invasion, the “rebellion or danger of rebellion” or if “the president cannot apply the laws of the United States with the help of regular forces”.

The streets were calm on Monday morning, after Friday, protests broke when the US immigration and customs service agents performed raids at several addresses in the city, as part of the administration's efforts to arrest immigrants. The demonstrations continued at the weekend, leading to a strong police reaction.

The White House claimed that protests are an additional reason for the Congress Republicans to adopt Trump's “Great and Beautiful Law”, which would increase border security and military expenses. The draft law, which is now in the Senate after being approved by the Chamber of Representatives, would reduce taxes, but also Medicaid benefits and eliminate green energy initiatives. “We need the project of the great and beautiful law to be adopted as soon as possible!”, Wrote Karoline Leavitt, the spokesman of the White House, X.

Conservatives in terms of taxation in the Senate, together with the former Trump counselor, Elon Musk, opposed the draft law, saying that it will increase the country's budget deficit.

Confrontation increases Newsom's popularity

Trump has committed to expel a record number of people illegally in the country and to close the border between the US and Mexico, setting for the ICE Border Control Agency a daily arrest objective of at least 3,000 immigrants.

On Sunday, the police declared the entire center of Los Angeles as an illegal area for public assemblies and ordered the protesters to return home, after the third day of violence that broke out during the manifestations against immigration.

During the protests, horse police tried to control the crowd. Some used deafening grenades and tear gas, CNN said.

The demonstrators shouted “shame!” To the police, and some seemed to throw objects, according to video images. A group blocked the 101 motorway, an important artery in the city center.

Several autonomous cars of Alphabet, Waymo, were burned on Sunday evening on a street in the city center.

The head of the city police, Jim McDonnell, said on Sunday night in a press conference that people have the right to protest peacefully, but the violence he saw from some is “disgusting”.

Asked if the National Guard intervention is required, McDonnell replied that the police will not “immediately resort to this measure”, but added: “Given the violence of this evening, I think we have to re -evaluate the situation.”

The police said he had arrested 10 people on Sunday and 29 the previous night.
