Five members of an American far -right group, pardoned by Donald Trump after their conviction for the role played in the assault on January 2021, require $ 100 million damages from the Ministry of Justice, AFP reports.
In the civil complaint filed on Friday at a Federal Tribunal in Florida, these members of the “Proud Boys” group say that they were victims of a “politically motivated persecution” meant to punish the supporters of Republican Donald Trump, who was then at the end of the first term.
Among them are Enrique Tarrio, sentenced to 22 years in prison, the hardest punishment for the assault on the chapter.
On January 6, 2021, hundreds of supporters of Donald Trump, incited by his unfounded accusations of election fraud, stormed this building, a sanctuary of American democracy, to try to prevent the certification of Democrat Joe Biden.
Over 140 police officers were injured and about 1,600 people were arrested and accused, over 1,270 were subsequently convicted.
Since the first day of the second term, on January 20, Donald Trump was pardoned or has committed their sentence during the prison period already executed.
According to the five plaintiffs, the administration of Joe Biden and the prosecutors responsible for the criminal prosecution have used “shameful and abusively the American judicial system and the Constitution to punish and oppress Trump”.
Last month, the new republican administration decided to pay almost five million dollars to a woman shot by a policeman during the assault on the chapter.
The case was to be tried, but the Ministry of Justice gave back after Trump's victory at last year's presidential elections and decided to reach an amicable agreement with the family.
