Around 250 million bees escaped after a truck carrying hives overturned on Washington on Friday, near the border with Canada. The authorities issued a warning, and people were advised to avoid the area as a precaution, Sky News reports.

The TIR transports about 31 tons of hives when the incident was produced near Lynden, near the border with Canada.

The driver, who was not injured, lost control of the steering wheel in a tight curve, so the truck trailer overturned in a ditch.

The Sheriff's office in Whatcom county (WCSO) urged people to stay away from the accident site, because it is estimated that about 250 million bees escaped.

The emergency teams were assisted by several local beekeepers to recover, restore and reinstall the hives to attract the bees, according to the sheriff's office.

“We thank the wonderful community of beekeepers: over 20 people have offered to help save millions of pollinating bees,” the sheriff's office wrote on social networks.

“The plan is to allow the bees to return to the hives and find their queen. The goal is to save as many bees as possible,” said the Sheriff of Whatcom County, adding that the process could take even 48 hours.
