The head of the British Ministry of Foreign Affairs David Lamma during a visit to the Norwegian Svalbard archipelago warned against the threat of Russia in the Arctic – Sky News said on Friday. Due to climate warming, Russian ships have more and more space in this region.

Lammy stated that the geopolitical situation of the Arctic region must be treated “deadly”, taking into account “the threats we see from Russia”.
On the coast of the Svalbard Islands, the effects of climate change are visible: there is less ice now than in the past. The melting of the ice cover means that Russian ships have more freedom of maneuver, Sky News said.
“We see that the Russian shadow fleet uses these waters. We see an increase in submarines' activity with nuclear abilities under our waters and see the hybrid sabotage of submarine cables” – noted Lammy.
“The Arctic is the northern flank of NATO. We work with Norway to follow and deter the threats resulting from hostile state activities, including critical submarine infrastructure” – the minister wrote on platform X.
Before Lammy's visit to the Arctic, during which he also visited Iceland, the British Ministry of Foreign Affairs informed in a communiqué about the common, British-Islandic plans to use the latest artificial intelligence technology to detect hostile activities in the region.
“As the global temperature increases and the ice cover is further melted, the previously inaccessible maritime transport routes open. This makes the arctic an increasingly disputed area, while the countries are trying to use new deposits of gas, oil and minerals, fueling concerns about safety,” it was written in a message.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in London, Russian nuclear icebreakers open the path to tankers that help finance Russia's war against Ukraine. This is a threat to safety and also to the environment, because Russia uses ships in poor technical condition, which increases the risk of oil leaks – added. (PAP)
