Experts indicate that it is best to do it right after the birthday. Reason? In pension calculations, ZUS takes into account the so-called average life expectancy, and its shortening by one month may translate into a higher benefit amount.
According to “Gazeta Pomorska”, people who plan to retire in the following months after reaching retirement age should submit an application after their birthday.

Example? If someone was born on January 15 and intends to retire from February, they should submit the application only after February 15. Thanks to this, ZUS will take into account the average life expectancy that is one month shorter, which may have a positive impact on the amount of the benefit.
The optimal moment of ending work and retiring
It is worth combining retirement planning with the appropriate moment of ending the employment relationship. Experts suggest terminating the employment contract a day or two before the end of the month and submitting an application along with an employment certificate on the same day. This schedule allows to simultaneously receive remuneration for the last month of work and a pension for the same period.
In turn, if the contract is terminated on the last day of the month, the application submitted on the same day results in the benefit being granted only from the following month. This means that we will not receive a pension in the month of termination of work.
July is more profitable than May
The choice of a specific month for receiving the benefit may also influence the amount of the pension.
July is particularly favorable, when the annual indexation of contributions and pension capital, carried out in June, is taken into account.
