The Russian Orthodox Church honors on this day the memory of the Monk Theodore of the sanctified.
The people of Theodore (Fedor) were nicknamed the Zhitnik, since his holiday was considered the last day suitable for sowing Yarovs. So they said: “The livingman has a care – a barley field.” On the table in honor of Fedor's Day they served porridge – semolina, barley, buckwheat or millet.
