The diplomatic mission marked on Sunday, through a message published on Facebook, the anniversary of the Aegis Ashore missile defense located at the Military Base Deveselu. US representatives have emphasized the importance of this system in NATO's security architecture and consolidating the Romanian-American Strategic Partnership.

“Today we mark the anniversary of the Aegis Ashore missile defense system in Romania, an important stage in the strategic partnership between the United States and Romania,” the message published by the Embassy shows.

According to US officials, Aegis Ashore, “a state-of-the-art system”, plays an essential role in defending the eastern flank of the North Atlantic Alliance. Since its operationalization, the Deveselu platform has contributed to “enhancing security and discouragement capacity” in the region.

“The collaboration between American and Romanian forces La Deveselu demonstrates the power of our alliance and our common commitment to regional stability. By its presence in Romania, Aegis Ashore contributes not only to protecting our allies, but also to strengthening the power and security of America,” the representatives of the Embassy.

Officially activated in 2016, the Aegis Ashore system from Deveselu is part of the NATO missile defense project and is operated on by US naval forces, its purpose being a defensive one.

The presence of the base has repeatedly aroused criticisms from Russia, which considers it a strategic threat.

An aerial defense base, located in the city of Redzikowo, near the Baltic Sea coast, part of a larger NATO missile, was inaugurated in November 2024.

In addition to the sites in Romania and Poland, the NATO missile shield includes destroyers of the American navy at a naval base in Spain and an early warning radar located in Turkey, according to NATO.

About 200 soldiers are stationed at the two interception bases in Poland and Romania.
