According to KOWR data, in the years 2009-2024 the number of wine producers registered in the record kept by the center increased 30 times (from 21 to 625), and the vine cultivation area increased 26 times (from 36 to 951 ha). At the same time, there was a 60-fold increase in wine production (from 412 to 25.6 thousand HL).

The traditions of Polish winemaking date back to the Middle Ages. After World War II, the impulse for the development of winemaking in Poland gave the European Union joining in 2004. However, by 2008, none of the producers reported to the records. Only in 2009, when the obligation to produce wine from own crops in the so -called tax composition, 20 producers registered activities.

The situation of Polish wine producers changed radically after the adoption of the Act on the production and spill of wine products of May 12, 2011, new provisions, including They introduced the concept of a wine producer, released from the obligation to register business activities for farmers that develop no more than 100 hl. The Act also abolished many earlier formal requirements for wine production.

At the beginning of the previous decade, the area of grape plantation in Poland was only 50 ha, and in the 2021/2022 season, the grapes were already grown on an area of approx. 620 ha.

KOWR data also indicates that the volume of wine production is growing. Fifteen years ago it was about 200 HL, in 2011 it increased twice, in the 2022/23 season increased to 25.6 thousand. hectoliters. Mainly white wines are produced in Poland (over 16,000 HL in 2022/23). It should also be noted that weather conditions have a great impact on the production volume.

From March 2022, KOWR has been kept by vineyards from which grapes can be obtained for wine production. The center also receives information from wine producers who intend to knead wine in a given wine year. Vine growers and wine producers are obliged to submit statistical data on the size of grape harvest and wine production until January 15 each year.

At the end of March 2025, 673 growers were entered in the vineyard records, who cultivate the vine on an area of over 1,000. ha

The records are needed because the wine is covered by the excise duty. Wine production, labeling and certification methods are also controlled. In addition, the State Inspection of Plant Protection and Seeding controls vineyards, because wine in Poland can only be produced from the vine varieties allowed by EU regulations.

In the wine year 2024/2025 an entry was made of 504 producers in the register of wine producers, and for the New Year 2025/2026 the entry of 24 producers was made (state at the end of the first quarter of this year). The economic year on the wine market begins from August 1 and ends on July 31 of the following year.

The size of vineyards in Poland ranges from several ares to several hectares. Most vineyards are located in the belt of south-eastern, southwestern and southern voivodships, where climatic conditions are conducive to growing vine. In recent years, however, it can be seen that vineyards also arise in other parts of the country.

Vineyards can also be found at agritourism facilities. Polish wines are also becoming more and more fashionable, and their production is increasingly profitable, which is why economic entities are created, for which wine production becomes a basic activity.

The best region in Poland for cultivation is the province. Lubuskie, and Zielona Góra can be considered the capital of Polish winemaking. Winner traditions in this area date back to the 12th century, for almost 200 years in Zielona Góra is organized a vintage festival.
