The head of the Polish government will take part in a meeting of EU leaders with the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, on Monday in Berlin. Earlier, Zelensky talked in the German capital with US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who currently play a key role in the negotiations between Ukraine, Russia and the US regarding a possible peace.

Before leaving for Berlin, Tusk announced that during the meeting he would ask “to what extent any prospects for peace or truce in Ukraine will be associated with a larger, smaller or the same presence of Americans, in terms of physical guarantees not only for Ukraine, but primarily for Poland and other countries on the eastern border of the European Union and NATO.” – I am curious what the answer will be – added the Prime Minister.

He emphasized that Poland is receiving signals from the American side Washington treats Poland as its most serious ally in this part of the world and that there is no question of reducing American security. – We will see what it will look like in practice – said Tusk.

He pointed out that Poland is a loyal ally of the United States, regardless of who is in power. He stressed that the government is doing everything to ensure that the presence of American forces in our country is greater, not less.

The first part of negotiations between the delegations of Ukraine and the United States regarding a ceasefire in Ukraine took place on Sunday in Berlin. On Monday morning, the talks continued. In the evening, Zelensky and Chancellor Friedrich Merz are expected to be joined by, among others, Prime Minister Tusk, French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Finnish President Alexander Stubb. The European Union will be represented by, among others, President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and NATO – Secretary General of the Alliance, Mark Rutte.

An American delegation was invited to the talks between European leaders and Zelensky.

Before Berlin, there is the eastern flank. Tusk: Poland is becoming a pillar

The alliance including the Scandinavians, the Balts and Poland brings serious results; we are a pillar of this format, said Prime Minister Donald Tusk a day before the first ever summit of NATO's eastern flank countries in Helsinki.

Tusk was asked about the summit in Helsinki on Monday in Wrocław, before flying to Berlin for a meeting of the leaders of France, Great Britain, Germany, the Netherlands and Italy with the president of Ukraine, devoted to the issue of a ceasefire in Ukraine.

– As you know, from the beginning of my term of office, I have attached great importance to establishing closer – in terms of military issues, cooperation in the Baltic Sea, and generally the security of the eastern flank – (relations – PAP) with our Scandinavian and Baltic partners – said Tusk. He noted that representatives of Romania will also appear at the summit for the first time.

The Prime Minister emphasized that this “very close alliance, which includes both the Scandinavians, the Balts and Poland” is his most important achievement in terms of regional policy, and Poland has become “the pillar of this format”. – I really have a lot of hope for it – he added.

The first-ever summit of the European Union's eastern flank countries will take place in Helsinki on December 16; will be devoted to threats to Europe's security and defense readiness, especially on the border with Russia, the Finnish government office announced on Monday.

The Finnish authorities invited representatives of the authorities of seven EU countries neighboring Russia to Helsinki: from the Baltic countries – Prime Minister of Estonia Kristen Michal, Prime Minister of Latvia Evika Silina and President of Lithuania Gitanas Nauseda, as well as the prime ministers of Poland – Donald Tusk, Sweden – Ulf Kristersson and Bulgaria – Rosen Żelazkov, and the president of Romania Nicusor Dan.

The topic of talks between the region's leaders will be the constant threat posed by Russia, as well as the need to respond to it through greater involvement of the European community and EU institutions in defense investments on the eastern flank. (PAP)
