The German Interior Minister Alexander Dobindt said on Tuesday that a recent decision of the Internal Intelligence Service to classify the Alternative Party for Germany (AFD) as a confirmed right -right organization is not sufficient to justify the party ban, Agerpres reports.
The service, called the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BFV), has modified its classification of the AFD anti-immigration party from “suspicious case” to extremism to the “extremist confirmed” Entity earlier this month, saying that the party “disregards human dignity” and threatens democracy.
However, the agency subsequently suspended the new classification, which would give it higher supervision powers on the party, waiting for the result of an action in court.
Regardless of the situation, the new evaluation has revived a debate on the prohibition of the party, a measure that can only be requested by the Constitutional Court by the Government or by any of the Houses of Parliament.
The alternative to Germany (AFD), officially listed as an extremist organization that threatens democracy. What does Berlin Internal Intelligence Service decision mean
“In order to be forbidden, it is not enough for a party to simply have contrasting opinions.”
Dobindt said on Tuesday that supporters of a prohibition of the party mistakes believing that a report of the information services that was the basis of the new Agency Assessment contains sufficient evidence to justify a prohibition of the political formation.
The minister said that the report mainly deals with the question whether AFD violates the principle of human dignity.
However, he claimed that two other aspects come into play when the prohibition of a political party is considered, that is, if it is a threat to the rule of law and democracy.
The report, said Dobrindt, does not reach this.
In order for a political party to be banned in Germany, it is not enough for the organization to simply have contrasting opinions. He must also follow them actively and must at least seem possible in the court of the court that the party could achieve its contrasting purposes.
