American actor George Wendt, who performed the emblematic role of Norm Peterson in the popular comedy series “Cheers”, ceased life at the age of 76, informs BBC News.
The beloved actor and comedian died in his sleep, in his house, in the early hours of Tuesday morning, his family announced.
“George was a devoted family man, a sincere friend and a confidant for everyone who was fortunate to meet him. We will be missing forever,” said a family representative, for the BBC. “The family requires discretion in these difficult times,” he said.
George Wendt performed the role of Norm in all 275 episodes, for 11 seasons, of the series “Cheers”, broadcast between 1982 and 1993.
He has obtained six consecutive nominations at the Emmy Award for best supporting actor in a comedy series.
George Wendt's character, Norm, was an ordinary and beloved client of the “Cheers” bar in Boston and one of the few characters who appeared in each episode of the comedy series.
Norm Peterson's entry into the bar was a comic moment recurrent in the series, starting with the greeting addressed to the other customers, followed by the hatred of the crowd, who called his name.
George Wendt met with some of the series distribution at the 75th edition of the Primetime Emmy Awards, in 2024, including actors Ted Danson, Rhea Perlman, Kelsey Grammer and John Ratzenberger.
Apart from the famous NBC series, George Wendt has played in several films, such as “Dreamscape”, “Forever Young” and “Gung Ho”.
He also appeared in the role of a boy played by Macaulay Culkin in the video “Black or White” of legendary singer Michael Jackson, a clip released in 1991.
George Wendt has been married since 1978 to actress Bernadette Birkett, with whom she had three children.
He was also the uncle of the actor and comedian Jason Sudeikis, recently known for the lead role in the “Ted Lasso” sports comedy.
