Pelagia Intercessor, Baklushnikov Day

On this day, the Orthodox Church honors the martyr Pelagia of Tarsia. According to life, it was born in the 3rd century in Asia Minor, in a family of noble pagans. The girl was very beautiful and well educated, so Emperor Diocletian decided to marry her for his heir. However, Pelagia was baptized and refused to marry the emperor's adoptive son. Diocletian called the girl to him, and when he saw her beauty, he wanted to make her his wife. Pelagia refused the emperor, for which she paid with life.

In Rus', Holy Pelagia (Pelagia) has always been considered an intercessor of innocent girls, as well as all unfairly offended. In addition, she patronized the birds.

In the evening, experienced gardeners conducted a rite on Pelagia, which was supposed to protect plantings from evil spirits and various pests. To do this, a touched pot was carried into the garden, put a nettle pulled out with a root and put a pot upside down in the bottom of the middle bed. It was believed that any enemy force, touching the burning nettle, will be frightened and escaped from the garden.

And the day of Holy Pelagia was also called the day of the bucks. It was at this time that the trees were chopped to dress spoons and made blanks – bucks.
