The most cozy city at the Border of Romania: it has the most beautiful green spaces in Moldova and unique street furniture

A small town at the end of the country has the most beautiful green spaces in Moldova. It is about Darabani, the most northern urban settlement in Romania, awarded by the Order of Architects in Romania for its landscaping. The city has undergone a spectacular development.

Darabani is the northernmost city in Romania, but also one of the smallest urban settlements on the territory of our country. A border town, crouched near the codes on the banks of the Prut. Apparently without perspectives and without a tourist “Come”, the Darabani of 2025 manages to overcome any prejudice and provide unforgettable experiences to any Romanian who gets to venture in this corner of the country. With a lightning development in the last decade, the North-Moldav Fair has the most beautiful green spaces in Romania.
The green city from the end of Romania
Darabani is located in the north of Botosani county, about 65 kilometers from Botosani. To reach this border fair it is enough to follow the national road 29b, Botosani-Dorohoi-Darabani, which snakes through a dream landscape, along the banks of the Prut. Anyone who gets so far from the big urban centers, naturally expects a desolate, rural, poverty and backward provincialism. However, Darabani is the place that breaks all the patterns and prejudices.

First of all, the roads like the palm and the beautifully drawn streets completely change any preconceived opinion. Then there is an incursion into a green world, dominated by parks, trees and green areas, perfectly cared for, which leads to the typical British lawns. To all these are added numerous old houses, mansions, boyar churches, among which are the inevitable elements of modernity, light companies, supermarkets, butcher, confectioners and coffee kiosks. Not even the gray block neighborhood, a sad memory of communism, can ruin the charm of this city. Among the most picturesque green areas in Darabani is the park near the church built almost 200 years ago by the great hatman of Moldova Toader Balș.

With an impeccable lawn and Western landscape arrangements, of which the large trees are not lacking, the park is the favorite place to relax the students who learn at the nearby high school. “In the park behind the church we come to gather, after hours. It is the most relaxing place. There is also ambient music. It is great”says an X -grade student. The area is attractive and due to the cozy pedestrian, which passes right next to the park. Here are cafes, restaurants, pastries and shops of all kinds. The pedestrian stops near the town hall, again an area surrounded by green spaces and special landscaping.

“This area is the pride of the city. It is our business card. Here everyone walks. The pies are good, at the restaurant they eat as well.”confesses a pensioner Dărăbănean. A few streets above, not far from the “Dimitrie Cantemir” High School, there is another interesting landscaping. This is a “green” amphitheater, with lawn covered terraces and many recreation areas. Here, every summer, concerts take place. Both the park near the church and the amphitheater are only a small part of the total area of green surfaces of the city of Darabani, which covers over two hectares.
Flower furniture, unique in Romania
Most areas look flawless. “For the arrangement of these green spaces I received a European funding of about 5 million lei, from the North-East Regional Development Agency”says Alin Gârbaci, the mayor of Darabani. In addition to these green spaces made with European funding, there are also a series of landscaping with tradition in Darabani, true symbols of the city. It is about furniture made almost exclusively of vegetable material.

In the green spaces near the building of the Darabani City Hall, but also near the church, banks and a fountain of flowers were located. “Both the fountain and the banks are made of muscles brought from the forest, over which flowers are placed. There is a lot of work but something impressive. It is a symbol of the city. In winter it dries but, at the end of spring, when it gives the heat, we restore them, year by year.”confesses one of the hangers dealing with the green spaces of the city.
The most beautiful green spaces in Romania
The green spaces in Darabani, including the flower furniture, also impressed the presenters of the Order of Architects in Romania. This is why Darabani received, in October 2024, the first prize, in Moldova, in the section “External public spaces”, deviating the seas of cities in the area.

“It honors us this prize very much. It makes every effort to keep these green spaces in the best. After the completion of the European project, the care of the green spaces remained in charge of the town hall. We have staff that deals with maintenance.adds the mayor of Darabani.
A fabulous area from a tourist point of view
At the same time, Darabani was noted and its revitalization is amazing. Important Border Commercial Fair, in the medieval era and especially in the 19th century, Darabani fell during the communist period. After 1990, it was effectively collapsed, becoming a territory of poverty and lack of perspective. In the last decade, the city has revived, turning into one of the most cozy cities in the extreme north.

In addition, the area has a fabulous tourist potential, with the locks on the banks of the Prut, the monasteries, but also the mansions that are waiting to be discovered. In Darabani, one of the most interesting and powerful festivals in the north of Moldova is organized, entitled “North Days”. This festival attracts young people from all over the country to cultural, sporting events, but especially at concerts with renowned artists in the pop area, rock, folk.
