Dozens of valuable competition pigeons, stolen from Belgium, were found in Mehedinti. The damage is estimated at 2.2 million euros

Dozens of pigeons of competition and breeding, which were stolen from Belgium several months ago, were discovered in Mehedinti County. Four people are suspected of committing thefts, and the damage is estimated at 2.2 million euros.

The Romanian Police announced on Friday, May 16, that it had a search in Mehedinti County, together with the DIICOT prosecutors, in a file regarding the establishment of an organized criminal group, theft and attempted theft. The action was carried out on the basis of a European investigation order, at the request of the judicial authorities in Belgium – the first court Court, the Hasselt Department.

According to investigators, between December 2024 – January 2025, four Romanian citizens, with their residence in Mehedinti, would have committed several steals on the territory of Belgium, targeting high -value birds among pigeons of competition and reproduction.

“As a result of the search, several means of proof were raised, and, on April 30, 2025, a person, in relation to one of the members of the organized crime group, was caught in a flagrant crime, by the police, while being transported with a car, 69 of the pigeons, of the Pigeons” He sent the Romanian Police in a press release.

Previously, in March 2025, the Belgian authorities carried out a search at the home of one of the members of the group, in the town of Vilvoorde, where 96 pigeons were discovered, of which 10 of considerable value. All copies were returned to the owners.

The 69 birds discovered in Mehedinti were taken over by the Belgian authorities and rendered to the victims of theft.
