Armenia stopped buying weapons from Russia and focused on deliveries from India – a report

The last deal between Moscow and Yerevan was concluded back in 2021, in the amount of $ 400 million, but it has not yet been fully fulfilled, the newspaper writes, noting that the Russian Federation and Armenia are allies on the organization of collective security agreement (CSTO).

Referring to the data of the Stockholm Institute for Research of Peace Problems (Sipri), Vedomosti pay attention to the fact that by 2024 the share of the Russian Federation in the import of armament of Armenia was 10%, although in 2011–2020 this indicator reached 94%.

The reason for the reduction in the share of Russia in the Armenian arms market in the RSMD was called difficulties with supplies due to continuing hostilities in Ukraine (where the army of the Russian Federation invaded).

At the same time, from 2022 to 2023, Armenia concluded defense contracts with India in the amount of more than $ 1.5 billion, the report said. In particular, we are talking about the purchase of the 214-mm missile systems PINAKA, 155 mm artillery ATAGS artillery installations, AKASH-1S air defense systems, AKSH-1S, anti-tank missile systems “Competition”, mortars and various ammunition systems, and various ammunition systems.

For comparison: with France, another major partner, Armenia from 2023 to 2024 signed contracts for the purchase of weapons worth about $ 250 million.
