The prime minister “spit on the face of our brothers and sisters from abroad” by tacit support of the candidate of the extreme right at the Sunday presidential elections, said Peter Magyar as he started the “pilgrimage” in Budapest. He wore sneakers, backpack and flag on Hungary.
“Today, at 11:30, we leave the Church of Saint Stephen. We will take a million steps for peace and national unity to Oradea. Join us even for a few meters or minutes,” said Peter Magyar in a post on X.
After a few hours, he made another post, with photos during the march and thanked a Romanian born in Bucharest who joined the march.

Last week, Viktor Orban surprised many by expressing their support for George Simion, the favorite of elections in Romania, for “defending Christianity and sovereignty” within the European Union. This position sparked the anger of the UDMR, the party representing a million Hungarians in Romania and who believes that George Simion is a danger to their rights as a minority and for the use of their language. He urged a vote against Simion.
Peter Magyar, listed in polls like a serious rival for Viktor Orban at the 2026 legislative elections, immediately took advantage of the opportunity and announced a 12 -day march to approach this electorate with dual citizenship. The Hungarian political climate is extremely tense, the two camps changing almost daily invective and attacks.
Viktor Orban, attacked by the leader of the Hungarian opposition for the support initially shown to Simion: “He just betrayed the Hungarians outside the borders.”
Orban convenes the National Defense Council
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Viktor Orban convened the National Defense Council, accusing his opponent of “actively participating in an operation of Ukrainian secret services”, because last week he broadcast on social networks a registration with the Minister of Defense dating from 2023. In this registration, the minister says that Hungary has resigned to Hungary prepare for a conflict.
Magyar presented the registration as a proof that Orban is prepared to train Hungary in a war, despite the fact that he publicly accuses the EU belligence by his strong support for Ukraine.
The government rejected this interpretation, claiming that it is “obvious and normal” to prepare for an “imminent war threat.”
He also believes that the flow of information was deliberately planned the day before Kiev announced the arrest of two people suspected of espionage in favor of Hungary. This case has led to the mutual expulsion of diplomats between the two countries, which have very bad relationships, Viktor Orban blocking Ukraine's accession to the EU.
