The Danish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Lars Lokke Rasmussen, announced on Wednesday that he will convene the US ambassador to discussion, after the article in which Wall Street Journal reported that Washington has ordered US Information Services to intensify spy on Groenland.

“I read the article in Wall Street Journal and I am very worried, because we do not spy friends,” Minister Rasmussen told reporters on Wednesday, in Warsaw, in the margin of an informal meeting with his counterparts in the other EU states.

“We will call the US Ambassador to the US Ministry to see if we can confirm this information, which is somewhat disturbing,” added the head of Danish diplomacy.

The US intensifies its intelligence collection efforts in Denmark, attracting the American spy apparatus in President Donald Trump's campaign to take over the island, Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday, citing two anonymous sources.

The American leader has repeatedly stated that he wants to take control of Greenland, a Danish semi-autonomous territory in the Arctic region, and refused to exclude a possible annexation by force, creating a diplomatic crisis, on the one hand, and Denmark and Greenland, on the other.

The leaders of Denmark and Greenland have said that only Greenlands can decide the future of the territory. However, they have to make a delicate balance between the firm rejection of American ambitions and trying to maintain good relationships with their traditional ally.

A recent poll has shown that most of the 57,000 inhabitants of Greenland want their independence and do not want an annexation by the United States, writes France Presse, suitable Agerpres.

On March 29, JD Vance paid a visit to the Pituffik's space base in Greenland, thus becoming the first American vice president traveling on this island during the mandate. On this occasion, he pleaded for the need for American control over the island, accusing the Danish authorities of neglecting their own territory and saying that Washington can no longer ignore the Chinese and Russian goals in the area, according to CNN and The Guardian.
