Robert Prevost was born in Chicago in 1955. He is the son of Louis Marius Prevost, French-Italian origin, and Mildred Martínez, who had Spanish roots. In 2023 he was taken to the dignity of the cardinal by Pope Francis. Until now, he managed one of the most important Vatican offices responsible for the nomination and supervision of bishops. Now he is the first Pope Augustian and the second clergy from the American continent, which acts as the bishop of Rome.
According to John Doughney, a friend of prevost from school St. Mary's, his calling was visible in the early years of his youth. Former parishioner of St. Mary's admitted that as a teenager the cardinal showed great determination and awareness of his calling.
Robert Prevost had very good relations with the deceased Pope Francis. He met him, still in Buenos Aires when he visited him as a general of the Augustinian order.
