Romania is in the top 10 worldwide for beer consumption per capita. The first 12 are only European countries

Romania is in the 9th place globally in the 2023 ranking of beer consumption per capita, with an annual average of 84.4 liters, according to data published by Kirin Holdings.
The Czech Republic occupies the first place in the standings, with an annual consumption of 152.1 liters per inhabitant, followed by Austria (106.5 liters), Lithuania (101.3 liters) and Ireland (100.7 liters).
The Top 20 also find states from outside Europe, such as Panama (81 liters), Mexico (79.8 liters), Gabon (78.4 liters) and South Africa (72.7 liters).

Kirin data shows a significant decrease in beer consumption in Romania compared to 2021, when the average was 95.6 liters, and the country ranks 4th worldwide. In 2022, Romania occupied the 9th place, but with an annual average of 91.6 liters consumed per capita.
The ranking is made annually and includes information from 170 countries.
At the national level, the beer market registered a 5% decrease in volume in 2023, up to 15 million hectoliters, according to the Brewery Association. Local production covers over 97% of domestic consumption, and about 50% of the ingredients used come from Romanian agriculture.
Lager beer remains dominant in the preferences of Romanian consumers, with a 93% share in 2023.
In contrast, alcohol -free beer continued to increase, with an advance of 5.4% compared to the previous year.
As for the types of packaging, PET beer sales have dropped to 37.4%, the lowest level of the last two decades. In parallel, dose sales (26.4%) and glass (32.8%) increased.
