Prime Minister Donald Tusk met with the Prime Minister of the Netherlands Dick Schoof on the occasion of the ceremony of the Dutch day of liberation, in which he took part as a special guest. This year, the Netherlands celebrates the 80th anniversary of the liberation from the German occupation.

“Freedom requires constant attention and concern. We are talking about 80 years of freedom, but we know that this fight in Eastern Europe lasted even longer,” said the Dutch prime minister at a joint conference with Tusk. Schoof emphasized that the Russian threat goes beyond Ukraine, which requires cooperation, including this in the field of defense. The head of the Dutch government praised the role of Poland in this area, assessing that in terms of “political” and “military” this country is in the middle of Europe.

During the joint briefing, Tusk announced the finalization of work on a new contract in the field of security and military cooperation between Poland and the Netherlands, which the ministry of defense of both countries is working on. Therefore, he invited the Schooof to Poland. “You will let you, so non -spather, here before the media, I will invite you to make a visit, maybe that day, in July, in Poland, when we will sign this renovated contract. (…) It seems that the meeting of that day in Warsaw would be the most in place” – said the Polish prime minister.

Asked about the details of the agreement, he replied that he would be very important that the cooperation of Poland and the Netherlands would resemble cooperation with France, Great Britain, Scandinavian or Baltic States. “I don't think anything stands in the way, (…) that our relationships, including cooperation for defense, would be raised to a maximum level. This is in common interest,” he said, stating that the content of the document will be disclosed when the contract is already signed.

The Prime Minister of the Netherlands did not declare that he would appear in Poland in July, but also emphasized the need to strengthen cooperation, including the one concerning, among others arms industries. He also admitted that he understood that Poland and the Baltic States have a “completely different feeling” when it comes to the threat from Russia than the countries who geographically to Russia a little further.

During the briefing Tusk, who had previously referred to Ukraine many times, he was asked about the celebration of the 80th anniversary of the Soviet Union's victory over Nazi Germany. In these celebrations they plan to take part, among others leaders of Serbia and Slovakia.

“It is not my task to comment on the decisions of the presidents of China or Brazil. (They) probably have other points of view about history and present, but no European has the right, he cannot pretend that he does not see where the threat lurks and how important it is to preserve solidarity and the European community,” the prime minister replied.

In this context, he assessed that the great tragedies of Europe, including World War I and II, had their source in “political blindness, indifference, such ambiguity and tolerance for evil.” “And we are here today also to say very clearly and loudly that Europe and the Western Community can never make such a mistake again” – noted Tusk.
