Alcatraz is to become a prison again. Is the decision of Donald Trump

Trump emphasized that the need for this step results from the need to face the problem of brutal and multiple crimes that he thinks are tormenting America. For decades, Alcatraz has become a symbol of effectiveness, order and inevitability of punishment. The president declared that the re -opening of the prison is to recall the fundamental importance of Law and Justice, which must be absolutely enforced.
“Re -opening Alcatraz will be a symbol of law, order and justice,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, adding that he orders the task of the prison office, the Department of Justice, the FBI and the Internal Security Department.
Re -opening will not be easy
Alcatraz enrolled in the pages of the history of the American penitentiary system as one of the heaviest prisons. In the years 1934-1963 it housed the most dangerous criminals-among them Ala Capone and George “Machine Gun” by Kelly. The harsh natural conditions surrounding the island – cold waters and strong sea currents – effectively discouraged from trying to escape. According to FBI data, during 29 years of action, out of 36 trying to escape prisoners, almost everyone was captured or died.
Despite the closing due to the high costs of maintenance and crumbling infrastructure, Alcatraz remained in social memory thanks to numerous film productions, such as “Escape with Alcatraz” with Clint Eastwood or “The Rock” with Sean Connerime and Nicolas Cage. The island currently acts as a tourist attraction served by the National Park Service.
The decision to restore the Alcatraz prison functions is associated with logistic and legal challenges. A spokesman for the prison office announced that the agency would comply with the president's order. However, the details of such an undertaking, possible difficulties resulting from the current National Park Service control over the island or operations costs, remain unclear.
President Trump has recently met with criticism related to his approach to justice. His administration also announced the opening of new institutions, such as the Detective Camp in the Gaantanamo Bay, which could accommodate up to 30,000. “worst criminals”. At the same time, there is a dispute regarding plans for sending prisoner gang members to prisons in El Salvador without conducting formal lawsuits.
