A large bank found out how Russians keep cash at home

According to the* VTB survey, every second Siberian stores cash at home.

At the same time, more than half of them can entrust their savings to the bank subject to high interest rates on deposits, guarantees of safety and protection of funds. Basically at home lies a small amount – up to 30 thousand rubles.

19 %of the Siberians prefer to store cash in the safe, as well as in various piggy banks (29 %) and in books (20 %). Some (12 %) put money in hidden pockets in clothes, and 6 % of the Siberians store cash on the old fashioned way under the mattress. Also among the most unusual places where money is hidden at home – behind the paintings, in kitchen accessories, in electronics, under the floor, inside toys or other children's things, in the bathroom.

Basically, Russians store a small amount of money at home: from 5 to 30 thousand rubles (more than 40 % of respondents) or from 30 to 100 thousand rubles (more than 30 % of respondents). Most notes that it is convenient to store cash at home, because there is always access to them.

At the same time, the funded account also provides the availability of money at any time – the funds can be placed and withdrawn without loss of previously accumulated interest, the bank experts say. Many use it as an “electronic wallet” for the operational use of funds, which at the same time brings passive income.

“The high level of banking products influenced the structure of the savings of Russians who are trying to accumulate more and more funds not in the“ pig ”, but in the bank,” commented Dmitry Volodin, head of the Department of Savings and Hutbn's crediting.

According to VTB, the share of cash rubles in savings and investments, with the exception of pension and insurance products, is currently at a historical minimum over the past 6 years, and by the end of the year it may still decrease.

* The survey was conducted from April 4 to 10, 2025 by a representative sample among 1,500 Russians aged 18 to 65 years in cities with a population of more than 100 thousand people.
